PepsiCo Inc. has finally created a bottle that is made entirely from plant material, which some consider to be “the beginning of the end of petroleum-based plastics.”

The bottle is said to look and feel the same as their old one, but is made from switch grass, pine bark, corn husks and other materials instead of regular plastic, known as PET.

Traditional plastic is made from fossil fuels, which are becoming limited and expensive resources to use. Using plant material to make the bottle will reduce the company’s carbon footprint and overall environmental impact.

I think the plant-based bottle is a great idea. Not only because it reduces the company’s environmental impact, but other large companies, namely Coca-Cola, will have to match it to keep up.

Allen Hershkowitz, a senior scientist with the Natural Resources Defense Council said, “When you have a company of this size making a commitment to a plant-based plastic, the market is going to respond.”

Domino effect?
